Best Exhaust System?
Well, for those of you who saw my other thread, I had to repo my sons car. And somewhere between the drive home and the few stops around town.. I fell in love with the little thing. After 18 rounds of fighting with the CEL throwing the CODE 4 against my head.. 2 sets of plugs, wires, rotors, and caps.. 4... yes, that's right, 4 reman distributors to get one to fix it... I finally got to drive it in a near flawless condition.
There is only a few minor things to fix, the coilovers ride like a tank. And the hacksawed exhaust system is a few decibels too loud. Ok, so it's a lot too loud.
My question is this:
What is the best exhaust system on the market for the 1990 EF HB?
Other questions:
Does anyone have any hard numbers to support their response?

Re: Best Exhaust System?
The best of the best....I can't really answer that unfortunately. 2.25in piping is recommended for an N/A D engine. I went with a full 2.5in OBX system because A. It was cheap as hell, has an actual dual tipped muffler (not a fart can), and I don't believe in spending enormous amounts for bolt-on's. B. I want to go turbo in the future.
Now exhaust headers....bisimoto's is the best of the best N/A. With it's 800 dollar price tag. Here is the D15B7 dyno sheet straight from bisi: http://www.bisimoto.net/forum/viewtopic ... 60a741dbf5
Cheaper header....ebay...megan racing (same difference)

See some options you have for exhaust here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10367
as you may know one shouldn't concentrate on having big gains on an exhaust system, better purchase for quality and durability and a quiet sound.
For headers there are many options but probably bisimoto are the best out there.

Re: Best Exhaust System?
i suggest 4-2-1 due to the scavenging effect.

Re: Best Exhaust System?
I have been looking at that bisi headers already, I really like them as well the price does not bother me much. Cougar and are are in the process of crunching numbers and possibly building a SOHC engine with a few goals in mind, HP not being one of them tho. We are still undecided on if we will go turbo or N/A thus far. I like the blow off sound of the turbo, but i love the old fashioned GRUNT of N/A. I do agree on the 2.5" sizing tho, every bit of information i have found on these engine all recommend the mandrel bent 2.5 piping. The fart can muffler does not bother me, but i do want to stay on the good side of johnny law and not annoyingly loud inside the ride as well.

Re: Best Exhaust System?
realistically in this thread you are mainly only going to get opinions rather than actual hard data. the best exhaust (for any car) is always a custom one; how are you with a welder?, just get some SS 2.25 or 2.5 piping in 45, 30 and 90 degree bends and start from there. apart from that the cheapest decent set up iv seen is the OBX one on e-gay. for headers the bisi one will be the best but has a heafty price tag $800+ shipping
. so just stay with either e-gay (may need a little work with the dremel to get it right; removing casting marks etc) or a name brand such as Skunk2. as for the configuration of it, a 4-1 header will give you a better top end and slightly more power at the cost of a small torque curve and is better for a car that gets driven hard regularly. a 4-2-1 is better for daily driving as it has a better 'scavenging effect' (wont go into this atm) and so will give you slightly less power but a much wider torque curve throughout the rev range (particularly down lower when compared to a 4-1) so it is more street-able for a DD.
.
so there are your choices, do it once. do it right

Custom piping with some magnaflow, dynomax or flowmaster oval-flat shaped muffler (like stock) is the cheapest option, will look like stock and won't be loud. The last option make your own muffler like cburke

That's what I'm running currently...2.5" piping without the resonator, and stock exhaust manifold . Who says it isn't loud?

Re: Best Exhaust System?
I have a 3 inch Thermal on mine and my brother has a 2.5 inch Thermal on his. I went through 6 exhausts to finally getting this one. Including skunk2 and some eBay names. All of which were too loud and or rusted out. The thermal is a nice deep tone on my car and that's even without a cat. The quality is out of this world. It looks like the day I bought it and it's 5 years old. I would definitly recomend to anyone. It's only around $550 so it's not crazy exspensive.

Re: Best Exhaust System?
i had a 2.5 inch cutom made exhaust put together by me and a friend using his mandrel bender. Total cost was 275
its probably gonna be your cheapest bet ...but u wont get the power like a 1000$ exhaust but ill almost guarentee that a custom setup would perform just as good as the mid rung exhausts. and with a lil trial and error u could get the exact exhaust tone that u wanted. Just keep in mind that its gonna be raspy not a damn thing u can do to get rid of that. Mine is as close to 0 rasp as ive heard. 4/2/1 header -> 18" resonator ->2-3 feet 2.5" pipe->muffler
i used a typical fart can style muffler but the resonator really made it sound better was way to raspy with that muff
my next experiment is with a tunable crotch rocket muffler ( a friend had one on his b15/turbo and it sounded great)
